Sun Damage Treatment

Photofacial Treatment:

A Photofacial utilizes intense pulses of light to penetrate into the skin, stimulating the constriction of blood vessels, tightening of collagen, stimulation of elastic tissue and lightening of from spots. Over time, this process reduces the visible effects of premature aging. Photofacial treatments target different chromophores (pigment creating cells) in the skin, which selectively absorb the light energy as heat and yield the desired response. The wavelengths of light treat red and brown spots by targeting the chromophores of melanin for brown spots, and hemoglobin for vessels or redness. The brown spots undergo mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days, while the vascular lesions resolve within 10-14 days.

Each Photofacial session is expected to reduce visible damage by 15-20%. Typically, your dermatologist will recommend 3-5 treatments scheduled about one month apart. There are longer-term maintenance treatments available such as Forever Young BBL to our patients as well. Research has shown that the Forever Young treatments actually reverse the genetic damage done to the skin by the long term sun exposure. With regular treatments, your skin can indeed look Forever Young. Your dermatologist may advise a different treatment schedule if you have any other skin conditions.

What to expect from your Photofacial Treatment; Temporary darkening of brown spots, minor swelling, and mild redness are typical and expected effects of your first treatment and may last up to one week. For skin conditions such as spider veins and rosacea, swelling and bruising are possible and may linger for up to one week. As these effects subside, you will notice smoother skin and a more even tone. As you continue treatments, the overall appearance of brown spots, redness, and fine lines will gradually decrease.
