Unwanted Scars

Unwanted scars

Incidence: Very Common
○ More than 3 million US cases per year
○ Treatable by a medical professional
○ Requires a medical assessment
○ Lab tests or imaging not required

Scars are part of the skin's natural healing process. However, they can cause pain, inconvenience, and self-consciousness. Most small scars will become nearly invisible if given enough time to heal, but for scars that are reddened, large, thickened or indented scar treatment is available to reduce their appearance.

Cause of scarring: Scars can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include any past injury or trauma to the skin.

What do scars look like?

Scars are usually self-diagnosable: Scars can be disturbing for many people leading to mental and emotional complications when they are disfiguring and aesthetically unpleasant. Side effects of scarring may including itching, tenderness, pain and occasionally restriction of movement. Physical deformity as a result of skin scarring can be functionally disabling.

Scar Removal:

Self-care treatment for scars: Moisturizing a scar with Vaseline or topical scar remedies can be somewhat helpful over a period of several months. Silicone gel sheets applied to the scar have also been beneficial.

Our Clinical Fraxel Scar Treatment:

Dermatology Associates of Seattle is a specialty center for Fraxel laser which was the original fractional laser treatment. Dermatology Associates were the first in Seattle to provide this treatment so we have the longest experience. The laser works below the skin’s surface addressing imperfections like fine lines, visible photoaging, wrinkles, scarring and age spots. Fraxel light energy stimulates your skin’s natural collagen and replaces the abnormal collagen in scars. Fraxel only treats targeted problem areas – so results are both focused and effective.
