When acne begins, it starts with a blockage of the pores underneath the skin resulting in the trapping of oils and bacteria. The trapped oils and bacteria cause small bumps which we recognize as blackheads. If there is enough inflammation, the result is the formation of pimples, and it can lead to scarring. The main cause of acne is thought to be genetic. Diet plays a role, though the extent varies in each individual. In general, a lack of cleanliness or the use of makeup is not the cause of acne.
